How to Build a Website Step 1 - Hosting

I going to cover a list of questions I frequently receive from new clients. The most asked question I get is "How do I get online?".

Well actually it is quite simple you need a hosting service, domain name and a web page. Now for the complicated version.

Hosting is where you put your website and all the Web pages. While it's possible to build a website on your personal computer and never move it online, it's somewhat pointless. No one but you will ever be able to see it. So the first thing you'll want to do is find a Web hosting provider.

Tri-County Web can arrange hosting for you. As a matter of fact I will include the first year of hosting as part of the design package. After the first year there will be a yearly fee based on the type of website we develop.

If you choose a Content Mamagement System site the fee will be more and include security patches to the CMS software and any 3rd party extensions incorporated into the website.

So hopefully I covered one of the main parts of getting a website online.

Joomla 2.5 Now Running Under the Hood!

Upgraded to Joomla 2.5 this morning.

Everything is running fine execpt my Contact Page. Please excuse the quite antiquated form I threw together on the fly. I will be reaserching a suitable replacement util the componement I've been using is updated to run in 2.5.

Joomla 1.7 is Here!

Just updated the site to Joomla 1.7.

Development went very smooth and the learning curve from 1.5 to 1.7 wasn't really difficult. I'll be testing new extensions over the next few months, mainly to see if I would use them on any of my clients' site.

The next upgrade to Joomla is coming at the end of the month. From all my reading it should be a very easy upgrade.

Facebook Pages and Your Business

I've been waiting for the big changes with Facebook to settle before deciding how I'm going to design for Facebook Pages. Now for a little bit of what this means to you.

Well, I'm realy excited about the change from thier propietery FBML(Faceboook Markup Language) coding to iframes that gives designers more options. Basically it gives me the ability to put a mini version of a current website or create one from scratch on your FB page.

Now the branding between your website and Faceboook page will be the same. For example check my Facebook page to see what I mean. The FB page is narrower but many of options on a website can be added to a FB page. If your marketing calls for a non-like visitor to see one version until they "Like" your page that can be setup also.

Once the visitor "Likes" your page you can give sever them up a different vesion of the page with a coupon or discount offer.

One of the most important things that should be added is a contact form. Tri-County Web can design a contact page which will gather any information you might need from a customer.

And finally you can add links back to your main website to conduct what ever business you offer.
